Thankfully, in the end, there was no threat to ECU’s campus today. An umbrella was mistaken for a rifle and we can all chuckle about it now. However, this does not mean that students were not legitimately scared for their lives today. Students have reported feeling terrified while on campus today; locked up in classrooms, huddling in corners on the floor, gripping pens as precautionary weapons. While it may seem silly now, it was very serious at the time, and everyone really believed that there was a gunman on campus. We’re interested in hearing your stories from today’s events! Where were you? How did you feel? What was going on around you? Let us know by commenting below!

Last night, The East Carolinian sent a reporter to The Scullery downtown after finding out that MTV was there. We were hoping that our reporter could follow around the camera crews and get a feel for what they actually do while filming. When our reporter got there he went inside of The Scullery, the doors were not locked. Sitting at a table by the window was Dan Savage, a woman, and a male. There were also two camera men, three people on computers behind them, about three or four other people which we believe to be producers/directors, and store employees. Our reporter headed for the back of the cafe, as to not interrupt what they were all doing, and was immediately told by a woman that he had to leave. He showed the woman his press pass and explained that he worked for TEC, but she rudely told him once again that he had to leave. As our reporter was walking out, the woman once again told him to leave. He then sat outside on the side walk, waiting for MTV to leave The Scullery or just waiting to see anything happen. At this point one of our photographers showed up and began snapping photos from outside (look for these photos soon online or in an upcoming edition!) The crews were waving at the photographer and reporter to move out of the way even though they were outside on a public street, even across the street at times. As they waited across the street the male (who we assume is a student) walked outside three or four times just to walk back inside of the cafe. The cameras were at different angles when he would go back in. Every time he walked back inside he and Savage would act like they did not know each other (even though they had just been sitting inside together talking). “It was really strange,” said our reporter Mike Davis. “It looked like, from my perspective, that it was semi staged.” Davis left, but when he was driving back by in his car he saw what appeared to be the first student leaving and another one (a female) going inside.

Did you know that MTV has been keeping its itinerary for this week top secret? That means that we have no way of knowing where MTV is all week, except for their planned on-campus event tomorrow night. We have received news that camera crews will be downtown and at popular student apartment complexes, however we have no clue when exactly they will be at any given location. TEC reporters want to be able to keep the student body up to date on MTV’s visit as much as possible, and in order to do this we need your help! Whenever you spot MTV on campus or around Greenville shoot us an e-mail at lifestyles@theeastcarolinian.com letting us know their whereabouts! That way, we can send a reporter out ASAP to cover it! We appreciate your help. Thanks!
